Advocacy: Adapting Europe to climate change
Climate Chance is continuing the advocacy work initiated at Liège on the issues of adaptation to climate change, nature-based solutions (NbS) and resilience.
The Council of Environment Ministers of the European Union (EU) held a meeting on 17 June, just a few days before the end of the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council. The meeting was marked by the adoption of the Nature Restoration Law, a landmark legislation part of the European Green Deal. This law sets concrete targets for the restoration of ecosystems, which is essential for protecting and enhancing biodiversity, limiting global warming and strengthening the resilience of people and nature.
As part of the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council, Climate Chance co-organised the Climate Chance Europe 2024 Wallonia Summit at the beginning of the year with the Walloon Ministers for Climate and for the Environment, Philippe Henry and Céline Tellier. This is the first European event to bring together non-state actors, dedicated to adaptation to climate change, nature-based solutions and resilience.
The Liège Declaration, the outcome of this collective work and signed by nearly 100 networks and organisations, has since been widely relayed and presented at major events on the international agenda, including the 1st Buildings and Climate Global Forum, the European Summit of Cities and Regions and the Forum of the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change.
Climate Chance led an advocacy campaign by widely disseminating the Declaration’s key messages to the European institutions: 1,000 European decision-makers (ministers, parliamentarians, heads of networks, etc.) received the key messages and concrete recommendations from our call to action.
We will be continuing our work to put our roadmap for adapting Europe to climate change at the heart of upcoming discussions and debates, from EU Green Week to the next climate COP in Baku in November.
