CODATU and CLIMATE CHANCE, in partnership with CETUD come together to organise the Week for Sustainable Mobility and Climate, in Dakar. #SMDC2021 from September 13 to 17.
This week will host two joint events : the 3rd Climate Chance Summit Africa and the Conference Codatu XVIII, also the perfect opportunity to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of Codatu.
These partners’ mutual commitment is based on the common ground of daily mobility in developing countries, its impact on urban populations and the fight against climate change at the local level.
The local level is crucial in the fight against climate change and there is a need to focus on the most emissive sectors including energy, construction and transport. Nearly 20% of greenhouse gases (GHG) measured in the largest cities on the African continent come from motorised travel.
This international event aims to promote local development compatible with the objectives of the Paris Agreement and notably related to mobility.
A large number of committed actors
The Week for Mobility and Climate, Dakar will bring together many actors engaged in the fight against climate change – including state and non-state actors – in order to provide space for the Senegalese and the African actors to mobilise on issues of sustainability and climate change ahead of COP26 to be held in Glasgow in November 2021, but also in the light of COP27 of 2022 to be held in Africa. Several networks will attend: the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoMSSA), the MobiliseYourCity community, the Club of North / South Mobility Organizing Authorities, Francophone University Agence (AUF) etc.
At the end of this week, a kind of ‘pre-COP’ for African actors, the participants will adopt the “Dakar Declaration”, an operational roadmap for sustainable mobility to strengthen locally-led climate action, which will be our collective contribution to COP26.
