Oworo Youths Forum is a group of young people from Lagos, Nigeria. The forum seeks to improve the living conditions of the people, by advocating for better infrastructure, social services, security and environment.
Overview of the project
The Oworonshoki community Allotment Garden is a community-led initiative to transform unused land into a productive and beautiful urban green space. The project aims to promote urban food security, healthy living and recreational activities, access to fresh food, urban greening, aesthetics, green jobs for residents of the community, biodiversity and conservation, education and innovation, climate mitigation and resilience. Our vertical garden kits made from recycled materials, such as pet bottles and organic waste, help households grow their own food and herbs. Our vision is to see every house grow 5% – 20% of the food they consume in their backyard, community space, or allotted plots.
Allotment Family initiative consists of four main components:
1. Vertical Garden kits: We offers a range of vertical garden kits that are designed for backyard gardening for households. The kits are crafted from the recycled acommunity waste collected from households, such as pet bottles and organic waste.
2. Community Garden: We runs a community garden where women from low-income communities can join the Allotment family and grow food on a shared space. This provides a platform for women to learn new skills, generate income and build social cohesion.
3. Herbal/Medicinal Garden: Over 50 medicinal crops are grown where people can have access to herbs and vegetables for the prevention of ailments. We educate the community about the benefits and uses of natural medicine. The project reduces dependence on synthetic drugs, preserves traditional knowledge and promotes wellness.
4. Awareness campaign: We conduct awareness campaigns to educate the public about the benefits of urban food production and organic waste recycling for food security and climate resilience.

Project still in progress
1. Installed over 400 backyard gardening kits in different households across the city.
2. Transformed over 10 hectares of unused land into a productive garden
3. Created over 300 green jobs for residents of the community
4. Produced over 500 kg of fresh food and herbs per month from the garden kits and the community garden.
5. Engaged over 5000 people in various educational and recreational activities
6. Reduced over 2 tons of waste per year by recycling pet bottles and organic waste into garden kits and garden compost.
7. Generated over 50m3 of biogas per month from the food waste collected from community residents
8. Donated over 500kg of fresh food to local food banks and schools annually
1. Improved food security and nutrition for the households that use the garden kits.
2. Enhanced income generation and empowerment for the women who participate in the community garden.
3. Increased knowledge and awareness about urban food production and organic waste recycling among the public.
4.Fostered social inclusion and cohesion among the women from different backgrounds in the community garden.
5. Contributed to climate change mitigation by reducing waste disposal and greenhouse gas emissions.
6. Promoted organic and sustainable practices for agriculture
