Setting up a plastic waste collection network in Senegal

We are an industrial packaging company. We started this activity in March 2022. We produce packaging from recycled plastic waste.

An initiative of SAVE PRO

Overview of the project

The initiative is to find young people looking for work in each area, hire them and equip them professionally so that they can collect plastic waste. These young people will be paid per day and per kilo of plastic collected, in particular the water sachets found in disadvantaged areas. We have mapped out Dakar and are planning collection points that will have their own supervisors. The waste will then be transported to our plant, where it will be converted into biodegradable bin liners. In short, the business model aims to reduce environmental pollution and provide jobs for young people.

Objective

Set up a plastic waste collection network to reduce plastic pollution, recycle the waste at our unit and transform it into biodegradable bin bags, thereby reducing physical pollution in the city.

Level of progress

Ongoing research

Project timeline

30/10/2024

Quantitative results

If each young person manages to collect 1 kg, we can in turn recover 80% of the plastic. The aim is to collect at least 1,000 kg every day.

Qualitative results

A reduction in plastic pollution, in particular plastic bags thrown in the street, and their transformation into biodegradable material.

Financing

This project is looking for funding.
