Overview of the project

The Palmarin ecosystem restoration project is an initiative launched by the NGO AMES as part of its partnership with the Palmarin town hall. onvinced that the degradation of the environment is a real threat to future generations, the NGO Alliance des Acteurs et Métiers des Energies au Sénégal (AMES), in partnership with the Palmarin Town Hall, wishes to intervene through this project in the restoration of some of Palmarin’s ecosystems in order to preserve its resources.

It is a project that comes at the right time, especially since it will eventually allow :

• the installation of an anti-salt dyke along the sea arm at Palmarin Ngounoumane in order to slow down the advance of salinisation of the soil towards the forests,
• reforestation of endemic species threatened with extinction and
• raising the awareness of the population on the preservation of biodiversity as well as on issues related to the exploitation of hydrocarbons.

With oil and gas exploitation planned in the area, the environmental consequences linked to this activity will have a strong impact on the ecosystems of the commune of Palmarin. It is with this in mind that the NGO AMES, as part of its missions, is supporting the local community of Palmarin to help it strengthen the resilience of its populations. The project will contribute efficiently to the fight against global warming through the role played by reforested plants in the absorption of carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. In addition, at the local level, the project will contribute to the creation of jobs, which is an effective way of combating rural exodus and illegal emigration. In terms of training, the project will provide an effective framework for capacity building.
