Overview of the project
This training and awareness-raising project on climate change establishes an artisanal unit for producing green charcoal from biomass waste, benefiting the women’s group of the village of Goghin in Tanghin Dassouri, Burkina Faso. The project combines both the valorisation of biomass resources and the raising of climate change awareness in the population.
The expected results of the project are various:
- Ecological: Reduction of GHG emissions and forest cover preservation.
- Economical: Job creation and new income generation for women.
- Social: Reduction of women’s work in collecting firewood, improvement of their social status and prevention of respiratory diseases.
- Significant reduction in the use of chemical fertilisers in agriculture by introducing charcoal (biochar) as a fertiliser.
Contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation through women's engagement.
Ongoing research

- 50 women trained in green charcoal production techniques.
- Another 600 women sensitised to the effects of climate change.
- Establishment of a small-scale green coal production unit managed by women.
- Reduction of GHG emissions; the use of 100 kg of green coal avoids the atmospheric emission of 166 kg of CO2.
- 30% of households in the project area use green coal.
- Decrease in the sale of wood.
