Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP) used the support from Global Greengrants Fund to carry out activities that will build the resilience of women in coal mining communities of Benue and Kogi state. Members of the Awo-Akpali and Onupi women cooperative of Kogi state were trained on the efficacy of rainwater harvesting and the use of energy efficient stoves. The Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) scheme was formally established.
Members of the cooperative were given energy efficient stoves, rainwater harvesting systems were installed in Awo-Akpali and Onupi communities of Kogi state. 20 members of the women cooperative in Owukpa community in Benue state and 30 women cooperative members of Awo-Akpali and Onupi community in Kogi state also received funding to their Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) scheme to improve their livelihood and financial capacity.
The purpose of the project was to build the resilience of women in coal mining communities of Owukpa, Benue state and Awo-Akpali / Onupi of Kogi state to the impacts of coal mining in their communities.
implementation
July/1st/2022 - September/30th/2022
- 30 women from Awo-Akpali and Onupi communities of Kogi state received energy efficient stoves
- Which has helped 30 households reduce carbon emissions that contribute to global warming by burning fuel wool for cooking.
- 50 women from Owukpa in Benue state and Awo-Akpali and Onupi in Kogi state also received funding to their Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) scheme to improve their livelihood and financial capacity.
As a result of the training on rainwater harvesting and of rainwater harvesting systems in the communities, women are now able to access clean water for domestic use within their communities, saving them from loss of productive time.
The project focused on women in coal mining communities from Benue and Kogi state, women’s capacities on resilience building was enhanced. The use of energy efficient stoves has also saved them cooking time leaving them with more productive time for other activities. It also led to conservation of trees in the community which reduces cases of flooding and soil erosion by water and wind.
The project was funded by Global Greeengrants Fund
