A sustainable urban renewal project, through the prism of participation and governance learning.
Overview of the project
Smarter Together (Vienna) is a joint Smart City project co-funded by the EU for Horizon 2020 implemented together with the cities of Lyon and Munich as well as the follower cities of Santiago de Compostela, Sofia and Venice (Kiev and Yokohama are observer cities).
- Over 30 international project partners form the consortium
- In Vienna alone, there are over 40 projects implemented mostly in the project area which is a central part of the blue collar district of Simmering
- Some 70 staff from 9 departments of the city administration ensure the long term integration of project results in the urban DNA and governance learning
The initial focus lies on large scale refurbishment of social (middle class) multi resident housing neighbourhoods which leads to an overall approach in regards to integrated innovative urban renewal encompassing sustainable refurbishment, numerous first of their kind e-mobility solutions, energy saving measures, all through the prism of participation either of citizens of stakeholders.
As a result, a school refurbishment and enlargement project (with four zero-energy gyms and 13 classrooms) was integrated. This triggered a variety of cooperation actions with educational institutions. In addition, Smarter Together also triggered numerous innovative actions in regards industrial logistics especially on the production site of Siemens and the Post.
Project focused on urban renewal encompassing sustainable refurbishment, e-mobility, energy solutions, industrial logistics through the prism of participation and governance learning.

Over 40 implementation and conceptual projects in Vienna alone with a EU-funding volume of some 7,5 Million Euro and currently some 100 Million overall investment.
Smarter Together became the Smart City Lighthouse project in Vienna and subject leader in regards to holistic, inclusive urban renewal with focus on participation and governance learning.
The initial funding of 7 Million Euro was provided by the EU Horizon 2020 programme triggering an overall investment sum of some 100 Million Euros mainly from different sources of the City of Vienna (housing renewal subsidies, school building budget) and funding from project partners.
