Sustainable Housing Initiative
Agence Française de Développement (AFD) finances, supports and accelerates transitions towards a fairer and more sustainable world.
Overview of the project
Developing countries are experiencing accelerated urbanisation accompanied by fragmentation of cities, a deterioration in the quality of life of their inhabitants and growing inequalities in access to adequate housing (gender, affordability, access to appropriate financial products, etc.). The COVID-19 pandemic has also highlighted the importance of housing in combating disease, but also the existing inequalities linked to this sector (e.g. quality, Internet access, overcrowding, etc.). Given its central role in the spatial organisation of cities, housing should be at the heart of the response to these issues. A supply of quality housing that is integrated into the urban fabric contributes to: the reduction of poverty and inequality, the social inclusion of households and local economic development as a major source of income and employment. Housing is also at the heart of strategies and efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
