Touba Fall Minigrid
This project aims at the rural electrification of the village of Touba Fall and the development of income-generating activities to improve the living conditions of its inhabitant's thanks to the implementation of a solar power plant and a mini electricity distribution network.
Overview of the project
The project consists of the electrification of the village of Touba Fall in an area not connected to the national electricity network of Senegal. The electrification will be done by a photovoltaic plant and a mini-grid in a low voltage alternative. The electricity needed for night-time use will be stored in batteries.
The electricity produced will be used to supply households, which will be offered a “pay as you go” payment as well as a micro-credit to finance the interior installation. The energy will also be used for community purposes such as public lighting, electrification of the school, mills, and pumping water for market gardening. All of the new uses of electricity will allow for an improvement in income-generating activities (even a creation, as far as market gardening and the conservation of fruits and vegetables are concerned) and will improve the conditions of schooling for students and adults.
As far as the market gardening activity is concerned, support will be provided to families in the development and enhancement of their plot of land on a technical and economic level. A training component is also planned with the establishment of an agricultural school to teach them better farming practices that will improve household income. Finally, a small market garden will be set up next to the school to sensitize the children to this type of activity and introduce them to good practices.
The operation maintenance and the collection of the invoices will be ensured by a company based in Casamance, which already manages with competence several mini-electrification networks.
