Ukuzola
Ukuzola is an association dedicated to social and climate change. It supports entrepreneurs from the South by offering them a solidarity coliving in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Overview of the project
Ukuzola is a pioneering initiative in Central Africa that combines solidarity-based coliving for impact entrepreneurs with the organisation of the Arbre à Palabres, a space for dialogue on climate justice. The coliving, located in Yaoundé, Cameroon, offers young social and environmental entrepreneurs full support, including accommodation, meals, transport and a monthly stipend. This enables beneficiaries to devote themselves fully to their projects without being forced to seek other sources of income. The projects supported are geared towards solving social and environmental challenges, in line with sustainable development objectives. Ukuzola pays particular attention to gender equality, with 60% of places reserved for women. At the same time, Ukuzola organises the Arbre à Palabres, a platform for citizen dialogue dedicated to climate justice. This event brings together citizens, experts and decision-makers to co-construct solutions adapted to local climate issues. The aim is to encourage the active participation of Cameroonians in developing inclusive policy recommendations that meet the needs of the most vulnerable communities. The initiative also aims to create a citizen monitoring network to ensure that the recommendations are applied and to encourage sustainable climate action. In this way, Ukuzola hopes to strengthen the commitment of young people and local communities in the fight against climate change and promote sustainable solutions on a global scale.
The aim of the project is to create a solidarity coliving space for impact entrepreneurs while organising the Arbre à Palabres, a space for dialogue on climate justice.
Ongoing research
22/11/2022 - ongoing
Ukuzola has achieved significant quantitative results in just a few months. The coliving facility in Yaoundé has housed 14 impact entrepreneurs, including 8 women, in an environment conducive to their development. A total of 200 hours of personalised coaching were provided, along with 60 practical workshops and 48 collaborative co-development sessions. The Arbre à Palabres brought together more than 50 participants from diverse backgrounds to discuss climate justice and co-construct policy recommendations. In addition, 10 monthly walks were organised to strengthen community cohesion and stimulate the creativity of the colivers.
Ukuzola has achieved a number of significant qualitative results since its launch. Thanks to solidarity-based coliving, the hosted entrepreneurs have been able to concentrate entirely on their impact projects, without the financial constraints of day-to-day life. Training courses in entrepreneurship, gender and CSR have strengthened their skills, enabling them to structure their initiatives more effectively. The Arbre à Palabres has encouraged an inclusive dialogue between citizens, experts and decision-makers, leading to concrete recommendations for improving climate justice in Cameroon. Ukuzola has also created a monitoring network, ensuring that the actions taken are sustainable and that people are continually mobilised to find lasting solutions.
The Ukuzola project was financed by a crowdfunding campaign, as well as partnerships with incubators and support from Crédit Agricole SA, the Medici for Equality endowment fund, the Schneider Foundation and the Africa Europe Foundation.
