eMag #4 : Climate-Biodiversity Convergence through Ecological Connectivity in Africa

In the run up to the Climate, Biodiversity and Desertifications COPs, how can ecological connectivity be integrated into policy, legal and (inter)national mechanisms to achieve the 30×30 target?

Despite advances made in sustainable forest management in Africa, protected areas and the adoption by some countries of national biodiversity objectives and natural capital accounting, overall progress has been slow. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted by governments in December 2022, gives new impetus to SDG 15 to protect life on Earth by setting four outcome-based targets to be achieved by 2050 and 23 targets to be achieved by 2030. Through the “30×30” target, which aims to conserve 30% of land and oceans by 2030, nations have committed to increasing the number of protected areas and to establishing effective management of these areas to reduce the loss of natural habitats and the disappearance of threatened species.

Ecological connectivity is one way of achieving this goal. As a cross-cutting lever, it helps to reconcile the issues of climate, biodiversity and desertification. It has therefore been placed at the centre of the agenda of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Ahead of the COP16 biodiversity summit in Cali, this eMag looks at concrete examples of how ecological connectivity can help achieve the 30×30 target. It also explores how an international initiative such as the Biodiversity Corridors Coalition, launched by Climate Chance in 2022, can help in this process.
