eMag #6: The role of non-state actors in meeting the challenges of climate change and the development of renewable energies
Africa is at a crucial energy crossroads, facing major challenges such as ensuring universal access to energy, energy security and the impacts of climate change. Despite the currently limited access to energy in many African countries, it is possible and imperative to achieve universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy services by 2030, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7.
What role can non-state actors play in addressing climate and development challenges of renewable energy?
At COP28 in Dubai, a high number of countries committed to tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030. However, the lack of financing to achieve these goals remains a major obstacle. In the run-up to COP29 in Baku, the discussion on the establishment of a « New Collective Quantified Goal for Climate Finance » is crucial to fill these financial gaps and support developing countries in their energy transition.
Concrete actions in favour of renewable energy are emerging in Africa, and this eMag proposes to highlight the multi-stakeholder mobilisation around the issues of renewable energy deployment, with an approach centred on local and participatory climate action.
