COP16 Biodiversity

Cali, Colombia

COP16 Biodiversity is taking place in Cali, Colombia, from 21 October to 1 November 2024.

As the first COP to implement the Kunming-Montreal framework (two years after the agreement reached in 2022 to preserve 30% of the planet’s land and sea by 2030), COP16 will be an opportunity for countries to present their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs).
More information on COP16 here.

Our events and advocacy work will focus on the convergence of the climate and biodiversity agendas and on ecological connectivity. The Climate Chance Observatory has just published an analysis note entitled “Leveraging the Climate-Biodiversity-Land nexus in a triple-COP year”, examining the issues at stake at the Biodiversity COP. A further note on biodiversity credits will also be published and presented at the COP.

COP16 is an opportunity for the International Coalition on Biodiversity Corridors in Africa, which Climate Chance coordinates and acts as the secretariat for, to convene its strategic steering committee to present its progress and define its roadmap for 2025.

Ronan Dantec, President of the association, and Alice Malek, Biodiversity Project Director, will be representing Climate Chance at COP16.

Side-event “Incorporating Biodiversity into Climate Change Adaptation through Nature-Based Solutions”

The event will promote a highly relevant debate on the integration of EbA (Ecosystem-based Adaptation) into climate change adaptation instruments and biodiversity conservation. It will highlight expertise in building climate resilience through the strengthening, restoration, and preservation of biodiversity, bringing together representatives from governmental spheres, civil society, and academia to share lessons learned and inspire joint action. With this event, we aim to raise awareness among various actors about the importance and potential of EbA in building socially just climate resilience, as well as disseminate best practices and lessons learned regarding the integration of EbA into public policies.

This discussion will help catalyze action and build capacity, ensuring that biodiversity plays a pivotal role in shaping resilient, sustainable, and inclusive solutions to climate challenges globally.
