The World Meteorological Organization published the State of the Climate in Africa 2022 in collaboration with the African Union Commission and the Africa Climate Policy Centre of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. The report provides an assessment of past and current climate trends across the African continent using data and information on extreme weather and climate events, as well as their socioeconomic impacts.
The report shows that the rate of temperature increase in Africa has accelerated in recent decades, with weather and climate related hazards becoming more severe. In 2022, over 110 million people in Africa were directly affected by weather, climate and water related hazards, causing more than 8.5 billion US dollars in economic damages. Additionally, there was a reported 5000 fatalities, of which 48% were associated with droughts and 43% associated with flooding. However, it is likely that the true toll is higher due to underreporting. The key messages of the report include:
