Week for Sustainable Mobility and Climate 2022

Adapting coastal cities & territories to sea level rise in West Africa

Summary

As part of the Sea’ties initiative, the Ocean & Climate Platform is organising a series of five regional workshops bringing together stakeholders concerned by the consequences of sea level rise and involved in the adaptation of their cities and territories.

After the Northern Europe, Mediterranean and North America workshops, the West Africa workshop aims to identify the main regional challenges posed by sea level rise in coastal cities, to highlight the sustainable responses provided and to draw up regional recommendations. Three priority issues are on the agenda: (1) the production, synthesis and sharing of knowledge; (2) the financing of solutions through the mobilisation of financial and private actors; (3) the strengthening, mobilisation and inclusion of local authorities in the decision-making process.

The conclusions of the workshop will feed the advocacy work of the Sea’ties initiative and will be shared at the UNFCCC COP27 and other international events dedicated to cities, climate, biodiversity and the ocean.
