Co-designing development strategies for affordable, dignified and climate-resilient housing
Description:
In Africa, the current housing deficit is estimated at 56 million units. More than 200 million people live in slums, informal settlements, degraded or precarious housing, with limited access to basic services. In Cameroon, 93% of houses are built by the inhabitants themselves. Formal housing accounts for just 10% of the housing produced in African cities. The majority of inhabitants therefore face climate risks on a daily basis, with self-built housing rarely incorporating the technical means or architectural design to ensure optimum resilience.
It is crucial that all those involved in housing production commit to mass production. But it must go hand in hand with in-depth reflection to offer quality, dignified and sustainable housing for all. In addition, existing precarious neighborhoods need to be restructured and improved. To meet this challenge, it is essential to prioritize land regularization, non-speculation in land and real estate, and financing that is accessible to all residents. This session will focus on the question: how can we co-design development strategies for affordable, dignified housing that is resilient to climate change?
