Nature-based solutions: an opportunity for adaptation
Description
Nature-based solutions (NbS) offer a no-regret, all-in-one response to various societal challenges and shared objectives across all territories: enhancing biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, improving residents’ living environments and health, among others. In the face of accelerating climate disruptions, NbS represent a key priority for adaptation, regardless of the environment or latitude in which they are implemented. These solutions involve concrete actions for the preservation, restoration, or sustainable management of ecosystems. They can be continuously adapted based on their impact on local fauna and flora, climate evolution, or their effectiveness in addressing the challenges they are designed to tackle.
This workshop will provide a comparative perspective on the implementation of nature-based solutions in Europe and Africa, featuring insights from scientists and practitioners, including national and local public institutions as well as development agencies. We will explore both the benefits and the challenges of implementing NbS in two key environments: coastal areas and urban settings.
Key questions to be addressed:
- What environmental and societal issues do NbS help to address?
- What are the specific characteristics of NbS interventions?
- How can the use of NbS be further promoted, particularly through cooperation projects?
