Summary
According to the IPCC, the building sector accounts for one-fifth of total global GHG emissions. With high population growth, Africa is experiencing a very fast and intensifying urbanization process. In parts of sub-Saharan Africa, the current building stock could be multiplied by 4 by 2050. It is therefore particularly important in Africa to anticipate the need for infrastructure and resources and to limit the environmental and societal degradation associated with urbanization process. The approach proposed in this workshop around the concept of sustainable building aims to bring together key stakeholders to formulate concrete practices to address the difficulties encountered in the building sector in the fight against poverty and inequalities, access to a sustainable and low-carbon energy, natural resource management and adaptation to climate change, including the use of affordable and sustainable materials and methods.
